LED Article

A lot of buzz about LEDs and LED fixtures this year.

For anyone interested, as is my custom, when we open up a new technology I write a series of articles in my blog for education on the technology. Thus, in celebration of our new LED line, I posted the first part in a multiple part series on LEDs starting with "LEDs Part I: Beyond the Hype."

This was a long time in the making and is basically about lessons learned in LEDs over the 18 months or so I've been experimenting and developing with them. One idea I put forth here and support well is that LED manufacturers aren't good at communicating the specs on the individual LEDs. In fact, they're using a paradigm that works for bulbs but when used for LEDs or in trying to compare LEDs to bulbs is misleading. Because of this, there is a gross misunderstanding of their capabilities both in strengths as well as weaknesses.

For instance, many have had the question, "if an LEDs lumen specs are so weak, and lumens per watt so small, how is it possible for a fixture using the LEDs to have photometrics that compare well to a fixture using a bulb with stronger lumen specs." Like the comparison of a 650w tungsten fresnel to an LED panel for instance. I'll show how that's possible with illustrations using well known fixtures.

Here's Part I:

Excellent and informative article, Richard!

I'm looking forward to the rest of the series...
