Does any one use a generator when they are shooting outside . how much wattage is the generator?.

example:

lets add
13 sony tv for viewing

how much wattage should the generator be and can you recommended a quiet one.

I helped a friend once this year and I know it was a small Honda and it was so quiet I keep looking to see if it was running. I'm sorry I didn't get more particulars about it but it was physically small.

The Honda "putt-putts" come in two flavors that I have seen: the 6500 watt and 5500 watt that are rated at 50 and 40 amps respectively. The smaller one should accomodate your package as listed (around 3000 watts). Neither are quiet. The solution is to placed them as far from the scene as possible, preferably around a corner or behind a truck to baffle the sound.

I use a couple of source 4 parnels (575W) with the high output HPL lamps.
With full color correct gel they can almost keep up with bright sunlight,
but I still lust for a couple of 575 HMIs.

Jacques, thanks for the info this really helps. I was concerned about the noise. I just looked at a troy built 5550 watts generator. The cost was only 650 not to bad. They would not let me hear it run so I thought I'd check a few more places.

I would bet that Troy built is really loud. The other beauty of the honda
is you can run computers and things like audio interfaces off of them
because they use inverters to produce a nice clean sine wave,
where some of the cheaper generators output a lot of "square wave"
which can actually damage gear and cause other issues.

I always wonderd what people did with their generators after the Y2K scare-- I imagine there are plenty still floating around with little or no use on Ebay--anyone got any auction deals? Now could be a good time as people try to make a little extra cash before Xmas.

It will depend on the bulbs you use in your DP but
Lets assume you will use 1k bulbs in the two DP lights and 500 in the omni

Plus your monitor and some other things that may come up

Maybe two generators are better than one..

Anyhow you can push about 1500 watts off a 16amp breaker.

As a rule of thumb Richard is right, 100 watts per amp capacity will wind up loading a fuse or breaker at 80% which is code.

A 15 amp breaker should be loaded to approx 12 amps. 1500 watts will equal 12.5 amps which is close enough.

You might want to try using the 650 watt GE HIR bulbs which will give the equivilent of 1000 watts of light.
