How do you mount two umbrellas to a light stand?
 

A long time ago there was a picture on the front page of Photoflex's Web site that showed a hot light, on a stand, with two of their RUD umbrellas mounted in a clam-like fashion around it. Anybody know how to create a setup like that? Is there some kind of gizmo that will allow you to clamp a second umbrella on the stand? I'm intrigued by the idea of using a silver umbrella to reflect more light into the RUD, kind of like a softbox.

I'd probably just use a Lowel Lobo clamp to affix the second umbrella - or something like that.

I have a pair of lobos. They are low tech but get the job done. B&H has them as well by Lowel and Westcott.

For a variation you may want a couple Manfrotto 2905's (is that the right number?)... B&H sells 'em for around $30 but I got several of them because they can be used a lot. I ALWAYS have one on top of every light stand I'm using... they double the flexibility of any stand/light. It's an "elbow" with an umbrella mount built in... even when you don't need an umbrella it's handy to have an additional positioning axis.

Got a quick question about all of these umbrella clamps: do they nick the shaft? My photoflex AC-SWCP does, and I'm worried about corrosion in the long term. What's so hard about machining a vee into the tightening surface? None of these cheap design issues ever seem to happen with drum clamp hardware (such as Tama), so why do photographers have to suffer with this? Unreal.
