$20.00 Home Depot Hair Light

I put together a $20.00 Hair light from Depot Depot.

Check out the Hampton Bay Small Can lights "U2" or U3"

I removed the back plate, drilled a mounting hole to screw into my Home Depot 6' light stand. You have to get a low profile bolt head to allow room for the light to pivot.

I used a Par16 60W halogen light bulb. If I want a smaller beam all I have to do is wrap some flat black foil around the light can.

It took me about an hour to put together.

$10.00 for the light, $10.00 for the bulb. 2000 hours life on the bulb.

When I clear some space on my web site I will put some pictures of my home made lighting kit.

Thanks

Joe

Good for you, Joe! If it works well for you, why not!

Joe Pitz January 27th, 2004 12:30 PM

Thanks Ken, Until I can afford the Arri Lighting kit, I will have to build my own lighting gear.

I can host a couple pics if you want Joe, click the email button below and send them over (but I'm leaving in a couple hours so if you don't send them quick I won't get them up for a bit).

I'd love to see the set up also, I love DIY stuff!

Cheers,
Brian

Thanks Clay and Brian, I am at work now, as soon as I get home I will email you the images.

I am also currently working on a DIY softbox setup. As soon as I finish I will post the details and images.

Thanks

Joe

Joe,

If you need some space, you can email your images to me and I will post the link here so everyone will be able to see it.

I posted a while back (link at bottom) about a 250W halogen clip light they have also... It is great because it has a strong clip that lets you afix it up high, and also has great pivoting ability... only $10 too.... I have three now...

The downside is that it is a flood... I have definitely used it as a pseudo-spot though, using a cone of black wrap. It worked out fine for a backlight...

You think there's any way to use that clip base with your lamp?

I'd definitely like to see the photos for your setup also...

Thanks Jean for the offer..

Barry, after reading your post I went out and bought a few 250W's myself.

The Clamp base that comes with the 250W should fit the base bracket on the can light. You will not be able to use the black thumb screw, as there is a clearance problem where the can piviots around the bracket. I will take some images of the light mounted to the light stand and the clamp base and sent them to Brain tonight when I get home.

Barry: What is that 'black wrap' material? Oh, just checked out the other thread and saw the explanation. Guess I'll have to pick some of that up.

Joe, I'm waiting to be picked up to go film my uncle at a falconry meet so I may not be able to host the pics if I don't get them before he shows up so Jean may be the better option.

Ken Tanaka January 27th, 2004 06:39 PM

Getting "picked up" at a falconry meet sounds like an undesirable circumstance, particularly for small mammals.

Joe Pitz January 27th, 2004 07:23 PM

Brian, No problem on the images. I will either cotact Jean or throw something together myself.

I use the black wrap myself. here is a link where I get it.

Web page is now up

I put a few images of the Hair Light up on a web site. Sorry these are quick and dirty.

My home server is being used for a web project so I used Geocities.

When I get more time I will document the building process better.
In the mean time ask me any questions and enjoy the images.
