mixing Fluorescent with Tungsten Lighting

I have a bunch of Tungsten Lighting

can i start to migrat to Fluorescent like adding a LOWEL CF20
Caselite 2 Fluorescent Light Fixture in the same scene?


any limitations of Fluorescent?


would a LOWEL CF20
Caselite 2 Fluorescent Light Fixture be eqivilant to a mediam size 1000 watt starlight softbox?

You should be fine mixing the two. They sell fluorescent bulbs timed to the same temp as tungsten. I mix flos with regular bulbs in practicals all the time, and it looks nice. I've even mixed them with Home Depot work lights and it looks good.

Just be aware that they most likely won't be as bright or far reaching as your tungstens. Also, the flos provide a nice diffuse blanket of light, but as a result it becomes very difficult to control spill and directionality.

We measure the quality of light in flouros with what is called CRI (color rendering index). The higher the number the better the spectrum of light given off by a fluorescent. CRIs of 85 and above are always preferable. many flouro lamps have their CRi's stamped on the tube. Bottom line a warm white is your first step, next to determine the CRI of the lamp. Look up the manufacturer and lamp model and find the CRI on line if you have to. Flouros with CRIs of 85 and above should mix fine with tungsten.
