Neon Transformer

For a short film, I need to dim a neon sign to simulate a short circuit.

Will I damage the transformer by using a standard household light dimmer on the AC to the transformer?

The dimming would only be for short blinks.

Thank you,

Douglas

Doug,

If you want to do this, buy the dimmer that is meant for inductive rather than resistive loads. A neon sign as you stated, uses a step up transformer and is therefore a coil which is an inductive load as opposed to a regular lamp filament which is a resistive load.

You would be more likely to burn up the dimmer unit if you used the wrong one.

Be careful. Let us know how it works out.

NEON TRANSFORMER

Dear Greg:

Thanks so much. Will search out the correct dimmer.
