Does anyone know if I can buy the "fabric" used for diffusion silks, or any other material that could work to a similar effect.

Check the largest fabric store you have near you. Look for a really high thread count nylon. If you can't find an actual thread listing you can examine the fabric with your eyes and find something good.

You're not going to find Rosco Grid Cloth if that's what you had in mind... but there are a lot of alternatives that are 95% as good... and in some ways, better.

If you're buying this to drape over a hot light then please ignore everything I've posted above... seriously.

Tough Spun can be had in either 24" sqs OR a roll that IIRC is 54" Xeither 10 or 20 feet.
Its made for diffusing on cam lights, strobes or stage type lights up to about 1000W. Just make sure you put the fabric out far enough with the higher wattage lights.

I think B&H has it in the rolls.

They are a little more expensive than where I was doing business however they have more products and their shopping cart is so much nicer!

I ordered some 1/4 silent grid cloth to make a 10 x 10 fly.

All of these would work
Which one you would use is determined by what effect you are looking for.
Silent Full Grid, (Sail Cloth) NFR
Silent ½ Grid, (Sail Cloth) NFR
Silent ¼ Grid, (Sail Cloth) NFR
These will soften the light as well.

Or the Cinenet also called Bobinette 1/2 Stop reduction (single net)
Use two layers for a full stop reduction (double net)

If you're buying a lot they may give you a discount. Rose Brand is arguably the biggest/best source for theatrical fabrics in the US, so we do quite a bit of business there. They construct soft goods for us; sometimes this gets complicated but I know it will be done right if I use them.

Looking through the Rose Brand site they list a product called 108" Lavender.
Now I know it is 108" wide but I am not familiar with the term "Lavender.'
Has anyone used it or know of another name it be called by?
