Where can I buy a 'cheap' gobo from?
 

Really into experimenting with light at the moment.

Found a mini Gobo on ebay, but sadly from the US. Which means I'll get royally stung by UK customs :(

Any suggestions would be great. Would prefer not going down the DIY route really!

You might mean cucaloris'. Gobos and cucaloris' are technically two different things. We probably use a cucaloris more often in film/video production than gobos. Gobos are used to make a specific pattern to project whereas a cucaloris is more of an undefined pattern--all this going by classic definitions of what these words mean rather than common regional or cultural definitions. You may use the term "gobo" for all this kind of thing in the UK for instance--not differentiating between the pattern or vague shape type. Gobos are used a lot in theater or concert type venues. They could project anything from a logo to a silhouette of a person. Cucaloris are often used when you just want to put some vague / undefined pattern on the wall behind subjects in a production to make for more "drama" or interest.

Why not just make your own out of black foil? The metal ones will be most useful when they have to be closer to the light fixture. You can also use foam core or wood for ones that are not so close to the fixture--thinking in terms of fire hazard and all that. Experiment with both gobos and cucaloris and see the effects of putting the pattern closer to the fixture or farther away.

Pro gobos can be made of glass or metal. For where to buy a premade one, I know there are sources for gobos online. I believe Rosco will custom make them for people but there are others as well such as this company:

not sure what you need , but today you can find pretty cheap video projector.
the idea is to use it as multi purpose light.
you can project logos, background, even use it a light projector.
just use a small laptop with a paint program. You can add light on a scene, leaving some part dark, adding a touch of any color in a corner and another touch in another corner, project moving background.
just defocus a bit to avoid pixel to be seen.

I'm still looking for a gobo projector. Does anybody have any recommendation?

Did a shoot this past weekend with a group of kids walking "into the light", was supposed to be a little bit of a sci-fi kind of feel. We put up a 20x20 solid off of the grid to serve as a black limbo BG and mounted a Source Four 750 on a C-stand into the lens.

We made a "bicycle spoke" pattern gobo for the Source Four out of Cine Foil, fired up a fog machine and made some magic. I ended up having one of the grips slowly waving his fingers over the pattern, the director went nuts, it looked better than any digital effect to get the same thing could have. All done with a four inch square piece of CineFoil and one light. I will post some stills when I get a chance.
