Comer 1800 LED Light Review
 

I had a chance to watch the LED light comparison video posted in this forum and found it really helpful in choosing which LED light to buy.

I need to shoot video in low to non-existent light situations at times, so a compact high output LED light proved the ticket.

I purchased the Comer 1800 LED light system and it came with a bag, a carrying nylon strap for the bag and some other cord gizmo that I have not paid any attention as to what it was, lol. Probably a power adapter.

In any event, after doing some shooting inside an extremely humid cave, I noted that with all the various filters and lenses flipped out of the way, the bare LED lights did a great job of evenly illuminating walls 20 to 30 feet away enough so that my 2 LUX videocam was able to shoot with good results.

When shooting small animals under dark shade, being able to turn the lights to the lowest setting helped to not blow out the subject while still providing light for detail such as fur hair.

If the clear multi-lens filter is flipped down, the light pattern reverts to a spot, so for even illumination in a large area, leaving it out proved best.

One of the things I noticed is the bottom shoe on the Comer light has a plastic male T piece. I am not overly enthused with the concept of a thin piece of square plastic praying that the light will not get banged about while mounted during wildlife shoots. I would prefer to see an aluminum bottom piece and would be willing to pay the extra for it, or a ball arrangement would be interesting where the light would just defect rather than crack the base.

I called up the Comer importer and expressed those concerns, and they said I was not the first one to raise the issue although they said they have not had any problems yet.

They said they did have replacement based pieces that can be replaced using a tiny jewelers style of Philippines screwdriver, so I ordered a spare base that cost a mere $5 or so. They said a few had ordered spares just in case also.

Anyway I am real pleased with the light system and their customer service.
