Great answer by Bill Davis.

With overhead lights I typically hold my white card angled almost 45 degress up. If the main light was from the side would angle it about 45 degrees to that side.

If you don't angle toward the light source, then your white card will be contaminated by ambient light reflected off the ground, subject clothing, etc,
