AWB ir sensor

If I Google "AWB IR Sensor" I get several results for Panasonic camcorders. Apparently they have an IR sensor for auto white balancing (AWB). I thought that white balance is a matter of the visual spectrum, and is not related to IR. Anybody has the answer?
