What's a good on board video light for the XL1s?
 

I wanted to know what brand/model a good on board (inexpensive) video light is?

I have looked at the varilux and the frezzi with a battery belt but the expense is about 700 dollars (most of it for the battery belt). I needed a 100 watt light or better and wanted one that would flood and spot. I ended up getting a Smith Victor, 100 watt light from Porters, I think you can actually purchase from them directly, just search yahoo for Smith Victor video lights and it comes up in the "webb page matches". I put it side by side with a frezzi and it looks very good but does not have spot and flood, just flood, but it shoots very nicely. 179 $, the battery is like a motorcycle battery in a pouch, also, I had to drill a hole in the light where it meets the arm to add an extra screw, the cheap rivets were not tight, quality is low but it works and comes with charger. I tried a Canon light but it was pathetically weak. Hope this helps.

Several fellow cameramen (persons) have older model frezzolini's that have mechanical switch's that move four reflectors behind the bulb closer to and farther away from the bulb, I will try to get numbers off of one but they look very old. In looking a at the newer models they all seem to be that "sun gun" type and don't resemble my friends light. Also, in checking the prices of frezzolini they appear to all be in the thousands (yes thousands) of dollar range. I search EBAY all they time, no luck. Unless your budget is endless the varilux may be a more sensible route.
