5K Fresnel

Is anybody using one of these, if so, at around 40 amps how are you powering it? Thanks

Don Donatello August 15th, 2006 11:06 AM

usually with a generator ... or using power on a sound stage ...
or if allowed/legal a tie in to the electrical main box - then sub boxes with circuits that can handle 40amps ...
note: that it's all special electrical cable not the kind you get from home depot ...

Michael Best August 15th, 2006 11:25 AM

good info thanks, I suppose there's no way to say 'couple' two 20 amp sockets on a generator?

Don Donatello August 15th, 2006 11:48 AM

i know it's been done ( depends on type generator) but don't know the how ...

call a lighting/generator rental house and ask them or ask a local gaffer in your area for the details ...

i've know that some gaffers will hook into a 220v electric dryer/stove plugs in houses with speacial plug-cable ...

Just an FYI Mole makes an adapter to use a 2k lamp in the 5k light.
#1921 5KW to 2KW Socket Adapter

If power availability prevents using a 5k lamp you can still use the light. Around $75 US.

We have 5K dimmers and 8 gauge wire with the big stage pin connectors.

I learned and tested something that would allow you to use 20amps (actually 16.6 amps) instead of 50amps (41.5)

A Arri 2K Fresnel will give you the same stop as a Mole Richardson 5k Fresnel.
The lens and reflector of the Arri are engineered to transmit the most amount of light from the lamp.

Or, I bet you could just use a 1200 HMI Par light instead of the 5K. Just add some CTO to make it 3200K. 1200 uses even less amps than a 2K tungsten Fresnel.

Yeah, pay attention to that amp figure that Charles mentioned for the 5K. Trying to power a 5K off of two 20 amp circuits will not work well :)

Around here, the common termination on a 5KW unit is a 60amp Bates cable.
