Vidled, Swit or Sony

Hi everyone,

I have done a search on the above 3 LED lights and have not really receive much info (other than Marshall's review of the SWIT, thank you very much Marshall).

Im looking at using these lights for macro nature work and will need as much output as possible. At some point, I was wondering whether LED torches by Pelican or Petzl will do the job just as well....any comments on this?

Im leaning to the Vidled as it has proven to be durable (at least in the video that they have shot).

I would appreciate any assistance on the choosing of one of these LED lights. Lite Panels and Zylight have been ruled out as I cannot afford their prices.

Cheers

WeeHan

Been using VIDLeds for a year & a half. They are reliable & run more than 4 hrs on the recommended battery, but not particularly powerful - comparable to a 20 watt halogen.

I can't comment on the SWIT or Sony options but I just finished a long shoot in Africa with a day light balanced VidLed and a Tungsten balanced VidLed (along with some Lowell lights.) While I was happy with the battery life, I found that they were just a little too underpowered for me, especially the Tungsten balanced light. I think if you are going to use these lights, you will need to use two stacked on top of each other. In order to use one you have to get the light so close to the subject it kind of becomes impractical.

The one situation where I did like the light was in run and gun situations where we were entering homes during the day time where there was no light. But even in these situations, unless the subject was less than 5-8 feet away, the light was like spitting into the wind.

Chuck and Nate,

Thank you very much for your replies. I really appreciate it. Think I will be getting a Vidled and a Swit as I will need dual lights for macro.

Cheers
