For what it's worth...I just received my low cost lanc control I purchased off ebay for $39 !
Works perfectly for my needs. Adjustable speed zoom, focus, power on off, photo, and record.
Clamp is padded and wire is long enough to clamp to pan handle or tripod leg. Comes with adapter cable?..which I didnt need on the XH A1. Has an "on screen" button that has no function on my cam?

Here's model number.
VIVITAR 8 BUTTON REMOTE CONTROL FOR MODEL VIV-RC-800

Wired LANC Remote Control for Canon XH-A1, XL-2, GL-2 - eBay (item 400173372396 end time Dec-15-10 06:09:43 PST)
