Camera in a steering wheel?

The other day I saw this (awfull) movie called Cold Creek Manor...

I´ve been watching the bonus on the DVD... and I saw there are some parts where they use a device that looks like a steering wheel, and a camera (PDx10?) hanging in the middle by what looks like rubber bands...

Anyone seen or tried this thing?

It looked like a homebuilt thing..

But I wonder how it works.. how much shock will it absorv, etc..

The Rig you saw (the Fig Rig) was designed by Mike Figgis for his film "Time code". You can see a little documentary about it on his web site, http://www.red-mullet.com/home.html
