Shaky Cam Technique

For motion stuff I take two different approaches depending on the lenses. For primes I like the Shane Hulbert style man cam. Then you can easily push in or out with a smooth step or moving your arms in and out and quickly adjusting focus. For zooms I use a Redrock Nano or my tripod. When on the tripod using either the 70-200 or 24-105 and the IS off - you can get office type movements by not locking down the head and just zooming in or out a bit. Like you say though - its all pans and tilts. But it still looks like someone looking around and watching whats going on. Its not distracting and camera movements make great edit points or transition triggers. Of course it sometimes requires a few tries to get the look right. The camera is always moving a bit and its dampened by the fluid head. For walk and talk stuff its the Nano and the 24-105 with the IS on to get rid of the small jitters.
