Learning from the Ground Up - My Adventure in Digital Video
 

Hey everyone:)

I probably will be heading over to the 'Introduce Yourself' forum in the next couple days to fill you in on myself, but until then I'll just sum up. Back in High School (I won't tell you what years, that will only serve to depress myself and possibly you as well) my friends and I got together on a fairly regular basis to shoot short skits with my camcorder. Fun was had, craziness ensued. I enrolled in Film Studies at University with the hopes of going into the film business, though sadly it was Film Theory as going into the production side of things would have almost doubled my tuition costs. Three years in I met a beautiful woman and we ended up getting married. I dropped out to open a movie theatre in my home town up here in Canada.

I've been wanting to get back into film for years now, and after saving up some money I recently purchased a Panasonic HMC-150 from B&H (thanks guys!). Problem is, other then my previous camcorder I've never shot on anything like this before so the learning curve for me is pretty steep. I've been doing some test footage, experimenting with the f-stop and shutter speed and things seemed to be going ok....until I tried to shoot an entry into a Youtube/Olympus contest. I ended up with an image like this....

I was lit with halogen recessed lighting above me and a 500W workshop-type lamp setup off to the side. I can't for the life of me remember what my f-stop settings were, though I believe my shutter speed as 1/120. I tried after I saw the horrible results to go to just the recessed lighting above my head and change the f-stop and shutter speed to compensate. Same results.

I ended up changing the shots to black and white when I was editing in Movie Maker (oh yah, I got the same results in Movie Maker and Edius Booster 2) and that got rid of the streaks entirely. The film ended up looking like this in b&w

Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong/how to get rid of these red streaks. I'm sorry if this is basic for you all but I really am learning from scratch.

Oh, and if this isn't the right forum for this then please, administrators, feel free to move it. I'm hoping I can keep updating this page with questions I have as I progress in my video skills and don't want it to disappear entirely down the memory hole:)
