Sights & Sounds of Hamilton

Hey guys,

I've spent the last few days on this compilation to show what the new JVC HM600 can do.

Was hoping for constructive criticism/comments, etc on my shots and editing. Unfortunately my Glidetrack slider is out of action so I was limited to a tripod.
And I do realise I missed a couple of focus pulls slightly :(

Cheers, much appreciated :)

Hi Jody,

I particularly liked that.

A few points; :)

I felt the opening pull shot could have had a little less sky in it. It started out well but I feel you could have done a smooth forward tilt to keep the sky to about a third of the frame.

I felt the pullback shot of the lake in the foreground and the mountains in the background at ~1:56 fills with too much sky, compare this with your ~2:12 shot of the bridge. Also compare it with the panning scene at ~2:54, where you are sort of employing the thirds technique, we know the sky is empty but we're unsure of the water and have an anticipation that something may show!
If the sky had nice cloud formations, or you knew a plane was taking off and going to enter the shot, then you'd put up 2/3"s of sky. (So long as the plane wasn't a dot in the sky.)

Sometimes the highlights were a bit blown out but that could be because of Youtube or it may be a camera issue or setting.

I suspect you're referring to the focus on the waterfall....

OK, now;

I liked the way it was thought out, spanning a 24 hour period.

I liked the soft, slow transitions, IMO, they suit the story perfectly.

On the whole I liked the music, I'm being picky here, I felt it may have gone up tempo a bit much a bit early, but that is purely personal, it certainly fitted most of the clip, particularly the night scene of the bridge.

I liked the natural sounds and how they were bought to the fore and used well.

I particularly like the composition of your stationary shots and the length of the pans.

Well done.

Al

Hi Alan,

Thanks very much for the feedback.

To be honest I wasn't thinking too much about the thirds technique - it's something I need to work on. I didn't really notice the sky before you mentioned it, but now I can see that there's definitely too much of it towards the end of the zoom out.

And I agree, the music tempo ramps up a bit early, but unfortunately the license doesn't allow me to edit the track.

Thanks again for the comments, much appreciated :)
