New Music Video shot on Sony HDR-FX1E and 35mm adapter
 

Hi everyone, I have just completed a low budget music video, which I shot on my HDR-FX1e, please take a look, your feedback is welcome. As many of you who have seen my short film 'The Riddle' would know, the vignetting on the video was a desired effect and isn't a trait of the adapter.

I was incredibly impressed with how much better the HDV format is for color grading and correction, and how much more the images could take compared to DV, before they began to break up. This is a fantastic format to work with, and a real pleasure to grade.

I also didn't have the problem, many have mentioned with fast moving objects causing the image to fall apart, all of my frames looked very good with no compression artifacts, and only one dropout on the entire shoot.

I did have fairly low expectations from the camera, however I was incredibly impressed with the results, which are infinitely clearer and sharper than DV when down converted to SD. I definatly won't shoot DV again.

You shot in hdv, so I was expecting a lo more of detail in the stills at 1280x720. ¿The lack of sharpness was intentioned? Can you post some stills in raw, as they are in the original tapes?

Hi there, thanks for your comments. Please bear in mind that most of the stills display quite a lot of motion blur, as the girls are allways moving and the shutter speed was frequently set to 1/50. This accounts for much of the softness which is visible in the stills. When the video is played back in SD, the crispness of the format really shines through. Many of the shots have also been scaled up slightly for better framing as the video was only really meant to be delivered in SD, which again softens the imaged slightly. That coupled with the original in camera upscaling from the CCD to 1080i and the in camera deinterlacing and further compression does however soften the images further. I would say that this is an awesome camera for SD delivery, and is infinatly clearer and sharper than most of the sd camera's and formats i have worked with when downscaled including digibeta however if I was to deliver in HD, I would perhaps be looking in the direction of the hvx-100 or the xl h1.

One last question, ¿de edit and grading were made in truly native HD?

The editing was done in premiere and the grading in After effects in HD. When it was completed, I downconverted to SD, ready for delivery in Betasp, Digibeta, DV, whatever is required by the music channels really.

Was this converted to 24p, if so what was the process like?
