"Lovers" in Shanghai

Hey everybody,

My name is Carl and I'm a 20 year old filmmaker based out of Melbourne, Australia, and Shanghai, China. (You can find out more about me on my site, if you're interested.)

Long story short, I run my own production company, and I'm also currently working on my first feature length film in Shanghai, called "Lovers." I put up a short teaser reel on my site, and I thought it'd be fun to post it in here.

and also

We are shooting with CineAlta, Betacam SP and Pro 35.

On the site also, are my other short films, music videos, and commercials ranging from my first shot on DV, to HD works. Hopefully they will entertain you in some way.

Thanks for your interest!

First off, to get you down, I didn't really get anything from the trailer. It didn't tell me anything about the story but seemed to just be a collection of shots...but then again it is a teaser.

However, the shots you had were great. Though some of the night stuff suffered from gain, the daytime stuff was fantastic. It must be amazing to shoot in a city like that, with all those locations.

Anyway, the stuff looks great, but content wise I wasn't able to get anything.

And...I love the timing of the music with the shot of the girl pretending to take a picture. It made me smile.

Hi Carl,

I think you have a beautiful editing style. I've watched most of what you have on the site now I think. There's a lot of experimenting you've done and I think most of it works nicely. Some of it was a little long or didnt allow me to completely follow the stories but I liked it. Great eye. It definately doesnt seem like the work of a 20 year old! It will be cool to see what you are doing in another 10 years ;)

Beautiful visuals, Carl! Pacing was great, and I even enjoyed the fact that we don't know what's really going on -- it makes for a great teaser of what's to come. Love the music as well -- may I ask where it's from? I'm a huge fan of those voice/piano melodies and would like to see if I can get it for my listening pleasure.

Composition great, but I felt I was watching a rough cut of a TV commercial. Kept waiting for some corporate logo to appear. Good visuals though.

The track is "Goodbye" from the "Sad Movie" OST.

Am headed to Shanghai in March. I need a single venue that I can shoot what appears as different places but obviously Shanghai. Anyone know where this scene from Zhang's "Lovers" was shot?

Also, anyone notice the actress uses her left hand to press the shutter when she pretends to take a photograph?
