A7r2 won't focus with Canon glass

Hey guys, this is probably me being dumb but... I cannot get either of my A7r 2 cameras to focus with Canon glass. They just hunt back and forth and never lock. I tried both using different canon lenses and both Metabones and generic adapters.

Is there a focus setting/option I may be missing?

Re: A7r2 won't focus with Canon glass

I'm wondering about this too. I'm currently looking at buying the A7SII but am finding many problems with these adapters on the sony A7S. A7SII, A7RII bodies as to AF when using Canon EF glass. it seems the more zoomed in (tele) you are the worse it gets. from what I've found so far some glass works better than other glass from a few online reviews. if you look at the reviews on B&H it goes from people being 5 star happy to 1 star disgusted and there are a lot of 1 star reviews.

I'm hoping to get some answers and this is my first post to get some info.

hope we can both get some definitive answers.

I did read somewhere that there were problems with some adapters not mating very well with the contacts, there do however appear to be many using them successfully

Re: A7r2 won't focus with Canon glass

Mine is working perfectly with L-glass. 16-35 f4, 24-70 f2.8L II, 70-200 f2.8L II, 300 f2.8L II, 500mm f4 II, both TC's, and my Tokina 11-16.
It does not work with my 50 f1.4 or 100 f2.8L macro.

The focusing is just as fast as with the lenses on my 5D mk3.
If you are shooting in low light it will hunt just like the 5D mk3.

Make sure you're using phase detect and not the other type which is super slow.

Oh...my last photo shoot was an air to air with warbirds shooting from the open door on a plane. About the roughest environment possible for a camera. I used the 24-70 f2.8L II which has no internal IS. So the Sony's internal IS took over and along with the super fast AF got some of the clearest shots I have ever taken.

And it does work in video mode as continuous AF.

Hey Robert
Which adapter and version are you using? I'm going to buy one asap.

robert, thats great to here your having good results. i wish that was the case with the A7SII which doesn't have phase detection like the A7RII.

Re: A7r2 won't focus with Canon glass

Update: I bought the Metabones MkIV that Robert is using and got perfect results. Saw a used MkIII and thought I'd buy it for kicks, also perfect results. So far those are the only 2 that work. Zero results with anything else I own, but certainly wouldn't mind a $100 solution instead of a $400 one.

Re: A7r2 won't focus with Canon glass

Update now that I have the A7s2, the Metabones MKIII and MKIII do work, but not remotely near as well as they do on the A7R2. Quite a bit more hunting, slow hunting, and occasionally miss focus completely.

Just posting this in case anyone is thinking they'll get the same AF results on the S as they do on the R. For the S, my Ommlite "generic" type adapters work exactly the same as the Metabones MK3 or MK4.

Re: A7r2 won't focus with Canon glass

Double update... I randomly tried one of my Commlite adapters (I have 6 I think) and it worked perfectly, AS GOOD as the Metabones mkIV.

I give up. I'm going to crazy glue all the working adapters I have right on to the camera bodies permanently.
