Anyone use the EOS Pro Color profile?

Looking at Andrew's Pro Color profile, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with it....

Certainly seems to look better then the stock profile.

OK, pulled the trigger and bought the profile ($15 over at Andrew's site).

Haven't done a lot of testing with it, but my initial reaction is that if you want your "look" to be generated in-camera (ie - don't want to do any heavy grading), then you can do way worse then this profile.

I hate grading, and would rather get it in camera, so this appealed to me.

The colors seem very close to what my eye sees. Now because it's not a log, it won't have the same dynamic range (brighter lights tend to be a bit blown out), but it's a very pleasing look. I still need to do some more testing on human subjects (the primary reason to buy this profile, as it makes more please skin tones), but so far so good. Haven't used it in bright daylight yet (too snowy), but some users prefer other profiles in those situations.

Now, there are lots of free profiles out there, and of course you can experiment to your heart's content, but if you want a quick down and dirty profile that works, this ain't a bad way to go.

One note - Andrew says that A6300/6500 users can't use color depth adjustments when in gamut mode (like preferred cine-gamut 3), yet I'm able to do so. I have the newest firmware, which might explain why. I asked Andrew on his youtube video about this; no answer yet.

Now available - EOSHD Pro Color for Sony Cameras including a7S II, a7R II and a6300 - EOSHD

I bought the profile as well and would agree that it gives you a good option for a pleasing baked in look. The colors definitely seem to be nice, but I don't know that it's the best option for lower light situations. I still need to do osme experimenting, but the black levels and midtones are definitely a bit crushed. For $15 though, it's well worth it.

I feel it looks a bit hit and miss, some shots look great, but in a couple of the shots the skin tones look too red to me. Just about to purchase a A7Sii so will look into the colour a bit further.

Re: Anyone use the EOS Pro Color profile?

Yeah, the red can be over-done.

Andrew goes into some detail about color temp/white balance. After experimented with it a bit, if your WB is there, the reds are more muted.... But it can be a matter of just a few degrees.

So far, I've used in low light and think it looks good (normal interior lighting at night).

Interestingly, all of Andrew's test footage was at night.

Would you recommend it for using flatter profiles? As I'll probably use flatter profiles as well on occasions.

I believe Andrew has said he's coming out with a log profile, but as of yet I don't think it's available.

If I was shooting log, I'd use cine gamut 3:

Not on the A7S ii (on the RX100 IV - Not got my A7S ii yet, coming this week.) but I purchased EOSHD Pro Color to try it on the RX100 IV before I get my A7S ii.

The Pro Color does look like it matches more to Canon DSLRs.

New test on an A7ii on youtube (not by me) - looking very nice IMO:

Thanks for linking that John, I was just about to when I saw you had already found it. Anyone who would like to see the original 4k render can PM me and I'll send it over. I've been so happy with the look that I have it loaded on my A7sii and A7rii both. It's saved me a ton of time in grading, usually now all I have to do is correct exposure and I'm done. Definitely recommend it.

I've set it up on my A7S ii but the pesky custom white balances I've not set up yet as everytime I tried I couldn't get the Kelvin right...

Going to compare it with a few other picture profiles I've found on the net.

Hey, thanks for uploading it!

And I agree - it's a nice thing to have in the arsenal.

Anyone have recommendations for setting up the white balance? I was thinking of taking it to my office and using LED lights that you can dial the kelvin in to set each custom white balance, or is there an easy way?

Re: Anyone use the EOS Pro Color profile?

My white balance recommendation would be to not to try to preset the manual 1,2,& 3 white balances. Save them until you're in a situation where the many presets that come with the camera don't work (such as being in an office where there are two competing colors of overhead lights, and both need to stay on, and maybe there's some daylight sneaking in as well.) If you try to 'preset' them ahead of time, then you'll lose flexibility on set.
I know it's a bit of a pain, but I've now gotten pretty quick at switching the camera to M, aiming at a white card and getting a balance, and then switching back to movie mode. Maybe takes 10 seconds longer than it would with a standard video camera.

Plus of course you have an entire color adjustment box available for any white balance you choose, where you can adjust B-Y & G-M. Just remember that you've adjusted them, or the next time you use the camera you may have a nasty surprise!
