U1/F30/F70/F75 transfer speeds vs camera?

Does anyne have a definative answer as to real world speeds for transfer in FAM/FTP mode between all the available XDCAM HD models?

I'm trying to work out the best solution for me for a desktop ingest player (or possibly deck with record features).

I phoned Sony Broadcast tech support in the UK but they couldn't tell me any tech data like this.

Is the F70 really faster in FAM mode than the F30 or even an F350/355? How much faster (if at all!) is the ethernet option fitted to the F70?

Thanks,

Paul.

I need this info as well.

I've just had an answer via the Sony support team who got the info from the UK XDCAM product manager.

The F30, F70 and all cameras transfer at 72 Mbps (mega bits per second)
The U1 does much better at 120Mbps

From what I understand (and it does make sense), the ethernet option in the decks won't make much difference over the Firewire/USB2 transfer options - but happy to be proved wrong.

Paul,

Also, the new F335, F355 cameras and F75 deck have the same drive motor than the U1. These devices should also provide much greater speed for reading XDCAM files from disc. There is a bit of overhead in the cameras and deck so they may not be as fast as the U1 but it will be close. You will see most improvements in read speed, the write speed (whenever the U1 gets a firmware upgrade to allow it to write too) should just be slightly improved.

Thierry.

Thanks Andy - would be nice to be able to afford one of those!

I'm getting a U1 so that is exactly what I was hoping to hear.

Paul Gale November 21st, 2007 01:47 AM

I get my U1 today - so will do a comparison test and post back here :)

Mark Silva November 21st, 2007 11:24 AM

Thanks Paul, looking forward to it.

As far as I am aware the U1 is the fastest XDCAM read device currently available.

Paul Gale November 21st, 2007 04:16 PM

Well I got the U1 today and set up a test - unfortunately just before the end I got distracted and missed the time!! then had a deadline to hit - I'll do it again tomorrow morning...

OK, so here are my test results:

58 min of recorded footage - HD 25P HQ 35Mbps - 15.6Gb on disc
Copying only the MXF files in the CLIP folder via Windows drag and drop in FAM mode.

F350 (1394) - 34 minutes
U1 (USB2) - 22 minutes

So a pretty impressive speed increase :)

Mark Silva November 22nd, 2007 03:03 PM

Wow I'm impressed with the speed of the U1.

Its faster than I thought it would be.
