1080/720 same card SXS

say normal recording is 1080/25p and you want to slo mo .. you have to change to 720/50p.. is it a problem to record both to the same card.. presuming it will only playback in one mode at a time.. for later ingest to computer/ Ext HDD will it be a problem,,?

Thanks

I really have no idea why everybody seems to think that slow and fast motion is only possible with 720 lines definition. That is just NOT true...

Hi there

Mmm really? In the camera menu PMW500 .. only in 720p mode could you get 50p PAL mode,or 60p NTSC mode.. in 1080 you could under crank.. but not over ..? is that not correct..

Anyway I wonder is it ok to shoot 720 and 1080 on the same card.. I would think it is.. but play back would only work for what ever the camera was set for at the time of wanting to playback..?

Thanks

Re: 1080/720 same card SXS

Well, on my PMW 320 there's only choice between 50i or 25p in PAL, so I wouldn't know about 50p, but Slow & Fast motion is possible as well in 720 as in 1080 lines. Perhaps the 500's menu is different.

By the way: we're on the wrong page here, as we're discussing EX-camera's. (PMW-320 and PMW-500). This is the XDCAM-HD page...

I dont think there is any camera that can over crank in 1080 is there..? maybe the Pana 3700 can I cant remember..

I think your confused .. PMW 500 is not an EX camera.. its CineAlta and can record XDCAM 422 HD.. which is deficiently XDCAM HD.. its the same chip as the PDW800 .. but records to SXS cards.

Thanks

Re: 1080/720 same card SXS

My PMW-320 does over- and undercrank in 1080, 25p. In overcranking is goes to 30 fps. I use it often to get nice, stutter-free slow motion.

As far as Sony's product names are concerned, they place the PMW-500 on top of their microsite of XDCAM-EX camera's: http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/micro-xdcamexsite. That's why, as far as I know, everybody has been discussing most of the 500-items on the EX-page...

As soon I I am using the cam again, I'll do a check if it can playback both 720 an 1080 from the same card.
cheers!

There's at least three Sony cameras that I know of that can record 1080 60fps on-board the camera.

1) FS100. 2) FS700, and 3) F800.

Vertical resolution on the F800 is reduced, but in the real world, you can't really see it and the slo-mo looks excellent. Much better than 720 60fps.
The FS700 looks pretty good at up to 240 fps.

In addtion, the F65 can overcrank to 120 fps and the F3 can overcrank to 60 fps, but you'll need the right external recorders to capture it. That's a lot of data.

I stand corrected sir..!!

Yes I must be confused.. I thought EX was only up to 35Mbps.. eg EX1/3 but now the 500 goes to 50 Mbps but records to SxS cards.. and so is EX.

Yes thanks still interested to now about 720 and 1080 on the same card.. I guess no one does this much as no has an answer..?

Thanks

ah ok thanks.. yes i thought that was the problem for slo mo in 1080.. too much data to process and things would blow up.. Iam behind the times..

Re: 1080/720 same card SXS

Hi again Robin,

just recorded some 720 footage, mixed with 1080 clips. When I hit the 'thumbnails' button, all clips show up in the viewfinder and I can play back all of them, no matter if the camera is in 720 or 1080 mode. I hope this answers your question.

I do not know abut ingesting, because I always use a SxS card reader to transfer my files, but I presume ingesting will work in both modes, as all thumbnails show up in any mode.

Hi Luc

Ok great, many thanks for doing that for me.. good to know..Iam pretty sure when I used the 500 it would only do 50p or 60p in 720p mode.. not that i would be shooting tons in this mode.. maybe the UDF 50 Mbps makes some difference..

Anyway thanks again!

Re: 1080/720 same card SXS

Doug, I dont agree.

A friend shot footage of a tiger walking along a sea. He shot this in 1080 overcranked (F800, reduced vert. resolution) - and the footage clearly suffers when cut with similar shots in non-overcranked mode (full res).
At least, when seen on a nice Full HD LCD. Probably not when reduced in size or send via broadcast codecs...

I also found, shooting in 1080 25p (and shutter of 1/100 or 1/215) and using TWIXTOR (vectorbased slowmotion rendering) gives great results also (if the background is ok).
