Messing around with FLM gamma again

Just playing around again.

Great article, Simon! So, I'm still a bit foggy since it's been awhile since I set my DSR450 up using the BBC settings you posted in your earlier article (part 1). If I use the BBC settings, AND I have the camera set to use FLM gamma 1, then does the FLM gamma "preset" replace the manual tweaks I used to mimic the BBC settings?

Hi Ralph!

Well, I've been messing around with them even more now! There do seem to be advantages to using one or the other depending on the situation. The other day I used the BBC suggested gamma and knee settings along with the black stretch. I found these to give me a much better match to the XDCAM HD Cinegamma 2 setting.

The FLM gamma settings do give a lot of range in the highlights. I think the results I got were because the FLM gammas compress the highlights less harshly than the BBC settings. I am hoping to set up some true technical tests to find out what is going on with the settings once and for all very soon.

Okay, I've been getting my camera back to factory defaults and saving custom user scene files for quick recall for a broadcast shoot I'm going to use the camera on this week. Just curious--I'm using an old Sony 4MB Memory Stick (miniscule by today's standards, but I bet those text files take up next to no space) that I had laying around to store the files. The DSR450 can store up to 100 user files on a single Memory Stick, and the DSR450 can only address Memory Sticks that are 128MB or smaller. Do you have any idea how much RAM that 100 user files would use up?

Simon:

Well, I've set up several different "SCENE" files, and successfully stored them to my 4MB Memory Stick. The part that's confusing the crap outta me is the difference between "ALL" files, and "SCENE" files. I only saved SCENE files, thinking that was saving all parameters. But the manual states that only saves settings set up in the custom user files. Everything seems to work. Do I need to do this all over again saving them as "ALL" files instead? Thanks.
