memory stick

Is the 330/350 still limited to the small 128meg memory stick?
I'm having a hard time finding one that small, the smallest I've seen locally on sale is 256. Was hoping maybe the new firmware solved this < but I guess that would be a problem seeing as you need a mem stick to upgrade to the new firmware right? >

Hmm, yes it does seem to have the 128 limitation.

I've been having a similar problem finding 128 sticks.

Yes it does! Hehe, I thought I would be sneaky and bought a 1gb stick first and the camera would not recognize it. The owner's manual also states this limitation. Seems silly to me.

It is getting harder to find 128mb memory sticks. I finally found one at Wal-Mart but I'm not sure what Brian has available in his part of the world.

32 Meg Memory Stick Is The Limit of Use As Per Sony

You will never need to use a memory stick in the 330L/350L over 32 megs.
So, just get/use a 32 meg memory stick, as they are very cheap.

Simon Wyndham November 2nd, 2006 09:45 AM

Its difficult enough to find a 128mb stick, let alone a 32 or a 64!

I also could not find memory sticks locally. Had dealer order a 128mb from Sony. Works great. Which reminds me I'd better order another in case I loose the darn thing.

cheers

UPDATE!! Just found one at my local BESTBUY. $29
Too bad it doesn't accept larger sticks because the 1giger stick was only $40!!
It would be a nice added workflow to be able to copy clips/proxy files from the camera to the stick for laptop use!!!
< Not to mention... our client monitor is a 35in Sony WEGA 1080i CRT
and it accepts memory stick and it plays 640x480 mp4 files from my little Cybershot camera >
Maybe it could be possible in firmware update. < dreaming... >

Simon Wyndham November 2nd, 2006 11:32 AM

It can be done on the SD cameras, but needs an additional module that plugs into the expansion slot.

Also, don't use the Magic Gate sticks as they are problematic. I bought a 128 MG MS stick and it didn't work.

Just plain purple 128 sticks are fine.

You probably can't find the smaller 128MB sticks as Sony bought them all up off eBay and now sell them via their spares department ;)

Greg Boston November 2nd, 2006 03:15 PM

I actually got a 128 mb Lexar Memory Stick Duo that slips into the included adapter to go into the camera.

The only 128mb memory sticks available are those with magic gate technology. Can't find them anywhere without MG. I can't believe a camera this advanced uses a memory stick that you can't even purchase any more. Now that's forward thinking, Sony.

Alister Chapman November 3rd, 2006 04:47 AM

I have been using magic Gate Duo sticks without any issues.

Bob Willis November 3rd, 2006 09:42 AM

Thanks Alister, I checked in the manual and it states that "Magic Gate" memory sticks are usable in the PDW-350. The only condition is that they are max of 128mb. Duo cards can be used with adaptor as Alister stated.

Half a year later - is this still true?

Is there still a size issue?

The latest update version PKG-1.62-AT1.54 enables you to use memorysticks up to 2GB. But you can't do the upgrade yourself. The readme file says this:

AT Boot ROM and AT.ROM Upgrade for Memory Stick Pro (up to 2GB)
This software upgrade will allow for the PDW-F330/F350 Camcorder to be able to use Memory Stick Pro memory stick up to 2GB in size.
The how to upgrade instructions are different than the previous versions for upgrading.

Caution: Do not attempt to do this upgrade without the MS-69A (A-1356-823-A) special jig that allows one to upgrade the AT Boot rom as well as the AT.Rom software in the camcorder.

I think you have to see your dealer to do this.
