Need more guidance 2/3 (J21ax7.8B4 IRS SX12)
 

First to all Happy Holidays.

We are planing to get the Sony PDW-F350 at the beg of 2007.
We have in our shelf a canon lens 2/3 (J21ax7.8B4 IRS SX12)

Question: Can we use this lens without spending money on a HD lens, only buying an adapter 2/3 to 1/2 , if yes please tell me which adapter do we need?

Althgough we now have bought 1/2" HD lenses (Canon KH16ex5.7 IRSE and Fujinon XS13x.3.3 RM wide angle), the Canon J21a7.8B4 yielded very good results. If you are in a money crunch and you can live with the lost of angle of view (to get an idea, multiply your 2/3" lens focal length by 1.37...), this is a very acceptable temporary solution. In order to use the lens, you will need to purchase Canon's LO-32BMT 2/3" to 1/2" adaptor.

As we've been discussing on this and other forums, we are just finishing up a feature pilot series for network that we are shooting with a pair of Sony 350s. Because of the demands of the series, we needed a series of lenses and selected the Fujinons shooting with the 5, 12, 20 and 40mm primes, a 15X "C" series CineZoom and the famous 10X100 George Lucas lens. All of these were paired up to their 350s using a 1/2" to 2/3" converter and I have to tell you, despite the fact that Sony is one of our major sponsors, the results are phenominal. As Thierry said, the multiplier is 1.37 and we could have used any camera we wanted on the feature but chose the F350 becuase it gave us outstanding results. Remember, the camera is a box and while you doubtless need a quality box to get quality results, the money shot is the glass. I'd far prefer to buy an F350 and put the savings into renting quality Canon or Fujinon lenses than rent a 900 or 950 package at twice the price fiuring $1000/day for the 350 package vs. $1800-2000/day for the 350 package.

1/2" lenses are coming into their own but the future is in 2/3" and there is such a large offering of 2/3" glass out there for rent right now that you should be able to get the shot you need even with the multiplier. In fact, that's the basis for our selection of the 350. Weherher it's night or day, we get phenominal results from the $25k 350 and thus can afford to buy quality base glass with the cameras and then rent what we need in specialized glass. If you're going for a quality picture, use HD glass with an HD camera. But you're saving so much by buying the 350, you can afford to rent quality HD glass and if you haven't seen it yet, you should really try out the 15X CineZoom Fujinon. It's like having a whole bag of primes from 7.5 on up or, with the multiplier, a 10 on up with crystal-clear imagery.
