Using other 1394 cables than the one supplied...

Does anyone else with a DR60 have a problem using other firewire cables than the one that came with the drive?

My DR60 works perfectly when connected to my laptop's 4-pin 1394 connector, but my desktop only has 6-pin ports. This means I can't use the supplied 6-pin to 4-pin cable that came with the unit. Every other cable I've purchased and tried doesn't work at all when I connect it to my desktop. I now have way too many firewire cables and a full DR 60 that needs to be emptied on to my workstation. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, and approrpriate amounts of kudos will be handed out. Thanks!

Have you tried it with any other PC (with a 6 pin 1394 connector) ?....just trying to work out if there is a problem with your PC recognising it or if it really is the cables. Seems strange that you've somehow got several bad ones - not impossible but it makes me suspicious about the 6 pin 1394 socket in your desktop!

The odd thing is that the other PCs I have access to have 4-pin connectors, and as long as I use the cable that came supplied with the drive, it works perfectly. I can use other firewire devices on my desktop at home using those very same 6-pin connectors, so that's why I'm so puzzled as to why my DR60 refuses to work with it.

In the meantime, I figured out a workaround. I have one of those tiny little Western Digital Passport drives, hook it up to my laptop, and run the Sony Transfer Utility program so the data is transported from the DR60 to the external drive. It takes a little longer to do things that way, but I suppose it will have to do until I can figure out what's going on. I'm thinking that the next step will be to find a PCI firewirecard with a 4-pin port to plug in to my desktop.

I would have to agree, the sony Firewire cable is flimsy, Its so cheap in design, I wouldnt use it.
I purchased a decent cable and so far so good...
