Using the exposure compensation--Any downsides?

I really dig the simplicity of exposure compensation -- (HDR-HC3)
Any downsides to this? It's just like you are opening up the iris right? It's not like digitally done correct? No artifacts created.

First it reduces gain, then it starts closing the iris and adding ND's. There are no artifacts.
