HDR-HC7 Ycc test
 

In one of the forums I read where someone was comparing 8 bit/color and 10 bit/color Ycc settings. This person reported color skew so I thought I'd give it a try myself. You can find my results at:

At least in my mind 10 bit Ycc is the way to go and is the only setting I'll be using. It's always better to capture as much image detail as possible and reduce it in Post if required.

Wow, that's cool. So, basically, you're suggesting you should acquire all footage with the "x.v.Color" option "On", regardless of the intended display (xvYCC compliant or not), correct?

There is no downside to shooting in this mode. In some cases there is no upside either, making it a neutral/non-issue.

By this summer their will deep color displays but even if your never going to get one for a long time, I would still keep it in that mode because by the time you do upgrade your display rather its 3 years or up to 10 years you’ll wish you did. This is sort of like when HDV came out, there were a lot of people that couldn’t edit HDV but they still shot it HD because they could always put the camcorder in DV mode when capturing to the computer.

Now if only these manufactures releases these displays quickly because it seems odd that the Toshiba HD-XA2, the Sony PS3 and a few camcorders have xvYCC but their aren’t any TVs yet that can handle it in the US.

I asked a question (among others) about the xv color in another thread since I'm considering the HC7, and this answers most of it!

Quite a bit of difference in the xv pix. Were those stills or frame grabs?

Just curious whether Vegas 7 is capable of taking advantage of the expanded colorspace? It would seem like capturing with "more info" can't help but give a better final output?

Sort of "you can't produce what isn't there in the first place", so more colors = easier post CC and better overall color in final output?

And does the extra info result in a rendering time increase - would seem like it would be inevitable, but not a big deal.

This definitely puts the HC7 up on my list... if it had the focus ring, I'd be selling my HC1s...

HDV colour is 8 bit?
 

Maybe I got this wrong, but I thought HDV used 8 bits for colour sampling? Or is this wrong, or something totally different? I guess the question is - is HDV able to retain this extra colour information?
