HVR-A1 Short Film
 

One of my first shorts with the A1. Please share comments, suggestions.

Setting: During the inaugural broadcast of the Radio Viroqua podcast, local celebrity Sibby, of Sibby's Organic Ice Cream calls into the show during a blizzard.

Shot in 1080i60, post with FCP 5.1.. Using Nattress rendered into 30p. S Gamma effect applied. Final cut is in 16:9.

1080 60i? what's your work flow?
 

Are those interlace lines visible on a tv monitor?

Yes, I need some assistance with that. Yes they are... at full resolution they are minimal.

Capture 1080i60, 'converted' to 30p with Nattress. However the best looking output (short of the interlacing artifact) seems to be 1080i. Does this make the 30p conversion moot? Even 720p seems to add a significant amount of noise.

---edit: Ok, my bad, upon updating my version of Final Cut, I know have a 1080 24p option.... Workflow: capture 1080i60 -- post on FCP 5.1.4, then rendering into 24p with Nattress --- lastly, saving as Quicktime mov as 1080p24.

Just for the heck of it...try shooting some clips/footage at 1080 24P. Import them as 1080 24P in FCP 16:9 (as long as you set the camera that way too) Bring it into Compressor as a "self" mov. Make a DVD. See if you don't like the absence of the interlace lines.

That camera doesn't do 24p...

1. Was any of that shot in NS (night mode)?
2. Were you using a wide angle lens?
3. What were you podcasting? Subject wise

I thought the footage looked decent, I'd like to see the 16:9 though or did you shoot in 4:3?

I was thinking again. Thought it was an A-1 canon. Did not notice it was a Sony.

Yes, most of the night images, then color corrected to more grey-scale

2. Were you using a wide angle lens?

I filmed this footage without the WA lens... it's reduction in light to the sensor adds too much noise, in low lux settings at least.

3. What were you pod-casting? Subject wise

It started out as a mock podcast for my brother's interview with a university. He was instructed to set up a podcast (the job includes assisting university departments with their use of media including broadcast). After recording a few, we really liked the eclectic radio show feel and decided to make it public eventually. We discuss a variety of subjects related to our funky small town of Viroqua, WI and the various ventures we're mixed up in.

In the end, we married the radio recordings to the video of the blizzard, which he used as a bonus video podcast.

Initially, I used Nattress to deinterlace and convert to 30p and 24p versions. The latest, which i will post shortly, does not use Nattress but instead an option that just showed up after a FCP update... it's allowing me to save as Quicktime 1080p24 from 1080i60 footage. I didn't think this was possible for some reason w/o a Third-party add-on.

It was shot in native 16:9... I'll post a version asap.
