DL Disc problems - DVD Players

Hi,

Everytime we burn edited wedding videos on DL Discs, sometimes they freeze on some home DVD players or worse it does not play on them.. We use Adobe Premier Pro to edit, Adobe encoder to create the DVD and Alcohol 120% to burn.. your thoughts...

hi Kren, prob wrong forum to post this question but DL discs are a bit hit and miss where quality of manufacture is concerned unless you use Verbatim.
Buy Verbatim +R DL then set book type to DVD-ROM.
Ensure you set the layer break correctly. use IMG burn to burn the disc as that will allow you to set the layer break in the right place.
watch your max bit rate isnt too high, I usually use CBR at 7500 and use AC3 for audio.
As with pressed discs you can get a pause at the layer break during playback.
I normally use a two disc box set if the length of the show exceeds a single layer disc because i know i wont have issues with compatability ( I only use TY watershield discs)
however next week I will be producing a D/L disc as i know my customers and its a limited run.

Why not just use Encore to burn your disc?

DL Discs can be a bit more frustrating, but I suggest using DVD-R DL instead of the +R discs. In my experiences, +R discs tend to have more playback issues than they're worth. I switched over to -R discs, and now I rarely have problems. When I do run into problems, its usually because of one or two reasons:

1:The data rate is too high. I try to not go any higher than 7.5 Mbps. This has worked well without too much degradation in image quality.

2: Burn speed is too high. Try burning at 1X or 2.4X. Yes, it takes longer, but the faster your write speed, the higher chance of errors.

DVD-R DL discs are a little harder to find. I have to order mine through Discmakers, because there aren't any stores around here that carry them. Hope this helps.

Just buy +R DL then set book type as DVD-ROM. All dvd players can read a dvd rom that solves the worry about compatability with dvd-r or dvd+r.( I believe DL-R is newer than DL+R)
Img burn will give you the best option as to where to place layer break otherwise the player will not be able to read the 2 layer.
If you buy cheap media you obviously are not pricing your product correctly or you dont care about your reputation, why take the chance?
If in doubt then just use 2 single layer discs.
It amazes me when I see other companies using cheap discs and I hear complaints about them skipping and freezing (and also the prices charged for the substandard disc).
