What is the actual width of the V1 lense?

Trying to figure out what the size of the lense is on the V1 in relation to 35mm lens used on a film movie camera. The manual states it's 3.9 - 78mm but that doesn't make sense as I've read on here people stating it starts at 37.4mm

So can someone clarify in simple terms (as new to cameras and lenses) what the width of the lens is, on the V1 and how attaching the Sony VCL-HG0826K 0.8x affects this.

Thanks

Kevin

I might be wrong but I think the owner's manual also says that the lens on the V1 is the equivelent to a 37.4 mm lens on a 35 mm film camera. Back when I shot 35 mm film, my favorite lens was a 28 - 85 mm lens. 37.4 is not really very wide IMHO. The .8 wide angle adapter lens converts to something close to 29 mm (35 mm film equivelent). I think I would still like to have something wider but some of those WA adapters can get pretty pricey.

Page 134 of your manual.

It lists both the actual Focal Length of the lens (3.9 - 78mm) as well as the 35mm equivalent (37.4-748 [4:3] or 45.7-914 [16:9]), but note that this is the equivalent for a 35mm film STILL cam, not movie film, which has a different frame size and thus different image size for a given focal length.

Thanks that is helpful, it's very hard to read in the manual as the line stating "When converted to 35mm still camera" I was never sure if it meant the line above or below!

So also been confused when people talk about "focal length" do they mean the vertical length of the zoom lens or the horizontal width of the lens?

Neither. Width is the lens diameter for filters and such, which in your case is 62mm. Vertical would be up and down, which, since a lens is round, would be the same. Focal length is front to back of a certain inside portion, which is why it changes when you zoom. Bigger numbers = closer (larger image).
