Tapeless: Flash Recording

Spoke to Convergent Designs who make the "nanoview" and "nanoconnect", as well as upcoming "Flash XDR"

They are planning a portable HDMI to Flash media recorder. The maximum size would be 16gig using two USB slots, and allow for 100mbps mpeg2 recording to either Long GOP or I frame.

There will be 1080i 24p support to the Flash XDR product in the future. Not the same as converting your V1U to an EX1, but a nice option to bypass the limitations of the HDV codec.

The converter will have the option of being battery powered so it will be a mobile unit.

The timing is tentatively scheduled for late Summer.

Dear David,

The nanoFlash, scheduled for late this year, will record to two Compact Flash cards. Each Compact Flash card can be of any size currently available, or expected in the next few years.

If you camera can do 1080p24, then the nanoFlash will be able to record it.

The nanoFlash's bigger brother, the Flash XDR, is scheduled to ship, in limited quantities soon.

Both the Flash XDR and nanoFlash are designed to be camera mountable. Both are battery powered. The nanoFlash will be much smaller than the Flash XDR. The Flash XDR has four Compact Flash slots and more features such as external audio inputs.

The Flash XDR allows for powering via a 4 pin XLR DC power source. It accepts 6 to 20 volts DC and draws 10 watts.
