V1 Progressive recording - Playback on Z1U?
 

I understand that the V1 records its progressive mode within the 60i stream... so what is the net result when playback occurs on a Z1U?

Is the format an interlaced stream with non-interlaced looking images?

Does the Z1U just see it as interlaced and playback is fully functional?

Is there any resolution loss by playing back on an interlace only playback machine?

HOWEVER,

the VU1 captures to tape as interlaced EVEN if you shoot progressive using pulldown.

no issue there, though i haven't done this personally.

This is valuable info and appreciated.

The V1 can record progressive, however its still in a 60i container, we shoot with both the Z1 and V1 and look at the tapes on either, The Z1 is not true progressive, however Sony says the V1 is, cause cameras like the JVC or Panasonic are true progressive. when I shoot progreesive in my V1 it shows its progressive in Vegas.

i use Final Cut and it all depends how you import it - do you use the High Res CODEC, the HDV native CODEC, etc. the fact is that all HDV cameras have to play back common formats, whether they be 720P or 1080i. i believe that was an agreement when the various parties came together to create the format.

in any event, you're fine with using the Z1 as your deck.

Imagine every second there are 24 complete frames being taken (when recording 24p on the v1U), and each frame is really two fields, and during a progressive recording each field is recorded at the same exact time as the other, that is what the V1U is doing, but to get this in a common 30 frame NTSC monitor able form it is then sent to a processor that adds pulldown making it 30 frames or 60i and then to an encoder to compress it down to HDV. So when you play this 60i tape on your Z1U it still has the same progressive look as it was intended to have. The Z1U can't record progressive because the sensors can't off load the image of the other field at the same time and the interlaced from this camera it will look much smoother to most people, and for some it will look like news video.
