V1 and PD-170 use the same batteries?

I think I have concluded this to be true, I just wanted to get reinforcement before I bought some batteries from a friend.

Sony was kind enough to send a pair of F970s with the V1. But, they are too big. What is the next size down?

Jerry,

Yes, all of Sony's handheld prosumer/professional cameras (VX, PD, FX, Z1, V1) use the same NP-FXXX InfoLithium "L" size batteries.

Steve,

I believe it is the F770.

Steve -- do you just want lower weight for hand-held use, or do you feel the F970 throws off the balance of the camera?

For me, although the 970 is heavier, it actually helps out on the balance on the VX/PD and FX/Z1 cams. I'm really curious how it would feel handling a FX7/V1U with it on...

I had no problems with the 970 batteries on the Z1, FX1 or V1. They last a long time, even with the viewfinder open.

Yeah, figure more than 12 hours of batt life on the 970 on the V1. Talk about power efficient!
