HDV Dropped Frames
 

I am shooting 24p in my new V1U and transferring the files via the DR60. converting them into MPEG streamclip to 1080i HDV and getting dropped frames warning in FCPRO 5.1.4. Is the MPEG conversion a bad idea? Should i capturing the footage from the camera?

Of course converting the files is a poor idea, your decoder is specifically set up to decode these as transport streams. So is your NLE. Additionally, you're recompessing the files and losing valuable data.
Why are you converting MPEG to MPEG?

Doesn't the DR60 simply record what was compressed and recorded on tape?
When is the signal decompressed and recompressed? Can't one convert the DR60's transport file (M2T) into the same content as would be captured by a NLE (e.g., FCP)?

Converting to FCP's required .mov format isn't required for any system outside of FCP. All NLE's excepting FCP and Avid will edit the native .m2t format. If you're going to convert the file to *any* format for editing, it should be a higher bitrate format, not a lesser bitrate format, and not another long form GOP format.
Converting to a 4:2:2 format is common. This is what CineForm and other similar tools are for.

Yes, the DR60 is merely capturing the same data that a tape would otherwise/in addition to, be capturing. This is the format that most NLE's prefer to see.

Either way, your quality is taking a serious hit if you're converting to another MPEG format.

to capture the footage from the hard drive in log and capture. But i tried that and still get dropped frames warning. i can't tell the difference between the two (captured and drag/drop/converted). I am running Firewire 400 still off my MacBook pro. I'm getting a Firewire 800 card in the next couple of weeks so maybe that will help.

if you're capturing to 24P, wouldn't you best best served by removing the pulldown by using telecine in Cinema Tools, and converting to AIC, as per the publicized workflow for 24P/FCP?

i haven't been shooting in 24pA but can i reverse telecine m2t files? Will cinematools read those eve though i can't edit with them? Hmmm.
