Sony HVL-LBP Light examples
 

I am posting some sample pics of the new Sony camera light, at a (dark) reception with my FX 7.

The light is better than I've read before, as it has a "focusing" lens which acts like a spot and reaches further, as well as a diffuser and normal setting.

The 1st and third pics show you the bridal table through the focusing lens, which I was approx 12 feet away from, and the speeches what is always a dark corner at the left end of the bridal table, about 15 feet from.

When I zoomed in on them (pic 2) I had adequate light.

pic 4 is using the normal setting during the bridal waltz, showing a more even coverage, and you can see the coverage as you progress down the wall from left to right.

(They're dancing under ultra violet lights, not my white balance!)


It's still dark, but with a bit of brightening in post, it's no worse than what you could see on the night.

It looks nice. It has some reach but doesn't blow out everything that is close to the camera. I think this one is a no-brainer for using at events.

What level of gain were you using? As the light is daylight-balanced, did you use a filter to try to bring down the color temperature of the LEDs?

The gain was probable +18.

I've found that in these dark reception rooms the camera is virtually flat out all night.

It's rather depressing after coming from VX 2000's, but I seem to get the best results by adding some gain to the midrange in the Edius white balance.

There was no filter used, but believe me, that's how it looked, as the ceiling of the dance floor is surrounded with ultra violet lights, which is why they have it ultra dark of course.

My contractor has a Z1 and I don't believe he gets a better picture at a dark reception than I'm getting, both cameras struggle a bit.
