I'm new and have a v1, Q about mic
 

Hello folks, I am new to this forum and I'm looking forward to posting plenty in the future.
My first question is; I am currently working on a feature film and i am also filming some behind the scenes stuff for the eventual dvd release, This weekend i tried to have my on board mic for ambience and a hand held mic plugged in input 2 for narration, that second mic didn't work, do i need to set up the camera for using 2 mics, i had both inputs on and set to manual.
any help would be really appreciated, i am trying to find my way around my new camera at the moment!

If you ended up with the on-board mic in both channels, likely you need to flip the left-most switch on the audio box from "ch1-ch2" to "ch1".

This switch controls whether the signal at input 1 feeds just record channel 1 or both channels.

If you ended up with cam mic on record ch. 1 and nothing on record ch. 2, the answer is in any of a number of areas and would need to be carefully traced out:
*mic
*cable
*phantom power needed for this mic?
*setting for mic/line
*setting for trim

But likely it is the switch on the audio box.

if i switch to just chanel 1 then i only get the sound coming from my left ear on the headphones

Not sure if your issue is yet solved...

Now that you have the on-camera mic into your headphones on left only, you need to get your other microphone properly hooked up and set up so you hear that in your headphones on right only. These camcorders do not mix, you'll need to do that if/when you edit, or, if it must be mixed as it goes to tape, with an external mixer.

If your handheld mic is a dynamic mic with xlr out (likely), just cable it up to input 2. Input 2 should be set to mic, level up, phantom off. If you're still not getting sound on the right side, hit the "status check" button, which will bring up your meters and some information about audio settings.

Channel 2 settings should be +48Voff/MIC/0DB. If they're not, turn off status and go into the audio set menus, xlr set, input 2 level = mic, input 2 trim = 0db, usually I'd have input 2 wind = off.

Try it again, see if you get signal on the status check meters and sound in the right side of your headphones.
