Z1U and 24P/SD... what is the result?

Can you use the Z1U in the 24P/SD mode as a substitute to a camera like the Panny DVX-100A?

That is, what are the issues with the Z1U concerning 24P. Many folks will not use it for HD in that mode but rather convert later in post.

Will it still do a respectable Standard Def 24P or not?

Thanks!

The Z1U has a "cineframe" 24-frame mode, which is widely regarded to be...ummm...not good. Don't use that mode.

You need to go to the V1U or the upcoming XDcamEX camera for workable 24p in this size of Sony camera.

25p results from the Z1 can be stunning for SD, I just made 2 short films with the Z1 in CF25 and it looked really good. You could consider shooting at CF25 for DV 25p and slowing down to 24 or 23.976.

Yes, stay away from CF24 - this comparison clip shows you the nasty jitter and loss of resolution that the pull down inflicts compared to CF30 (equivalent to CF25) and 60i. It's a blow up from one of Kaku Ito's old clips (from an FX1 I believe, but cineframe modes are identical to the Z1.)

Thanks for the small clip playback Z1 CF24. I have not yet play around Z1, but most of them say is good.

Hi there

I mostly use the CF25 mode on my Z1 for SD video clips and find it superb... Imported into PPro in HDV, edited and then downscaled in After Effects the images are excellent... to be honest even the HDV stuff looks pretty darn good.

Ok I could shoot 1080i and use Magic Bullet to convert, but while good it is so slow... for an SD project I wouldn't hesitate to use CF25.

cheers
Gareth

My needs were to use the Z1U for the 1080I ability but still have the option of using it as a quasi-DVX-100A (SD 24P) when needed.

I shoot freelance so it's a matter of handing off (shipping off) the DV tapes
when the shoot is over. I have no real time to convert them in post.

Sounds like this camera will not work both ways... which is a shame.
