when is the new one coming out?
 

Hello,

I do work for a company that would like to purchase a couple of new Z1. I am wondering when the new or upgrade version of the Z1 is likely the come out? The camera is several years old so.... They tried the V1 but they keep having problems with the steadyshot of the camera so the V1 is no go for the moment.

It's been out for a couple months now. It's the Z7.

Is the Z7 50i/60i switchable, like the Z1?
As far as I'm led to believe, the Z7 is not an upgrade for the Z1.
Am I wrong?

well , yeah looking at its specs I am also not inclined to believe its an upgrade, the manual lens is for instance something totally different for the users of the z1. But then the viewfinder is placed the same way as the z1.

Nobody really knows... What do we know:
- FX1 and Z1 aren't upgraded in a long while
- Sony has brought out many new cams, including the Z7 and the EX1

It seems that the Z7 is 'sort of' an upgrade, if you go by it's name, and the same sensor size and stuff... On the other hand, it also feels different.
Personally, I don't think that Sony will bring out an upgrade to the Z1 on top of all the new camera's they have released in the recent months, it would be just too much.

You can indeed take the Z7 to be the Z1's replacement. Some folk though the EX1 took that spot, but the Z7 came along and it was obvious really. The EX1 and EX3 form another line altogether.

The FX7 replaced the FX1 and the V1 replaced the PD170. The A1 replaced the PDX10, which took over from the PD100.

My spec sheet is on the other computer so I can't answer the PAL/NTSC question, but as the Z7 supersedes the Z1 I'd be very surprised if it didn't. But then again - the Z7 has lost the most useful inbuilt mics that the Z1 has as well as having a smaller top screen so other things might well have been deleted at the same time. Not every new model improves on everything.

Yes, it must have rolling shutter effects as all CMOS cameras to date have this - it's part of the way the signal is read from the chips. You've really got to go looking for it though in my view, whereas CCD smear was something to keep you from using high shutter speeds.

The FX1 has long been discontinued here in Europe David, but you can still find the last one or two on websites. It's still a very good buy in my view and I'd have trouble recommending the FX7 over and above it.

Are you sure about that Tom? I always thought the fx7 was some kind of vx2100 successor? Wasn't the fx1 in size and possibilities one step up from the fx7?

I'm still hoping that Sony will fill the gap with a new cam that will go between the fx7 and the ex1, they made the hvr-hd1000 which is actually a step below the fx7 and then you have the ex1 and ex3 which are way above the fx7.
I would be happy with a EX0,5 :)

Panasonic is coming with their AG-HMC150 which is supposed to replace the DVX100, hopefully Sony will bring out a new model matching this one in the price categorie of the Canon xh-a1.

But the FX-7 is not...

The Z7 is not a replacement for the Z1 as stated by a sony rep.

I have thought about buying a Z7 but with its auto focus problem i could have lived with that using manual rolling shutter if you shoot weddings forget it the picture looks crap when it is slowed down.

I have the Z7 and overall think it has better picture quaility than the Z1U. plus having True progressive modes and the CF card recorder I will never go back to tape again.

I shot these clips a NAB in Vegas with the Z7 24p 48 shutter (with Marco turn off in menu the auto focus works better)
