Z1E v rest

Hi. Still haven't made final choice on camera. Although I'm keen to get the Z1E, I don't control the budget...so I was wondering if anyone could advise as to whether any other cameras can be classed in the same category as the Z1E?

The reason for purchasing is to put together a programme (church related) that will be broadcast on one of the Sky digital channels. The Z1E is right at the budget's limit so I was hoping to provide some alternatives as comparisons. My knowledge is very limited in this field as you can probably tell.

Many thanks.

Z1 is good for all. As NEW HD Cam is launching end of the year 2008 SONY FX1000 and Z5. Only to look for CMOS chip or Super HAD CCD

The Z1 one is a great camera. Especially if you need something that is backwards compatible (you can shoot dv and dvcam in PAL and NTSC). However, I have finally gotten fed up with interlacing, non-square pixels and low data rate. If I were you, I would look into the EX1 or EX3. It produces progressive, true 1920x1080 at a higher data rate. Much easier to work with.

Hi James,
The Z1 is a great camera, and one I use myself. I've had mine now for three or four years.

It is worth bearing in mind that with technology moving on at such a pace these cameras only have a limited shelf life. It was one of the first HDV semi-pro cameras, so is really getting long in the tooth. I'm sure it will be discontinued very soon.

That said: You'll probably get a good bargain on a Z1, but it's replacements (Z5 & possibly the Z7) will last you longer and the current retail prices are close. They both address many of the weaknesses inherent to the Z1. With this new range of cameras I can't see a reason the go with the old Z1...

Regards
Gareth
