Hi

Does anybody know if the new Fx1 will have a lanc controller for zoom and focus controller and/or if the canon ZR-1000 would do the job as it does on the other sony cameras as vx2000, pd150 etc?

LANC is LANC. Generally there is no difference how these controllers operate from one camcorder to another. Since the FX1 has a LANC jack, any controller such as the Canon ZR-1000 should work with it. Although you'll be limited to only those functions which an individual controller provides. By this, I mean that no existing controller can take full advantage of the FX1's extensive zoom and focus preset controls. But any LANC controller will at least do variable-speed zoom, record start and pause, basic focus control (if the controller is so equipped), etc.

Until a better one comes along, that can leverage all of the zoom & focus preset controls in the FX1.

I guess you are talking about the IR remote, then it has very limited number of control.

to handle the new "special features" that this FX1 offers - I'd say Varizoom et al. will likely develop something that will be a "Master Control" for the cam and allow shot-transition, etc. to have maximum control.

And while I'm in the mood for speculating on technology, why not someone develop a combo i-link/firewire capture-card-HD-tuner out combo? You heard it here first!

Just think - you use the firewire/i-link to get your HDV stuff into the computer. If your HD tv is firewire ready, you play out to the t.v. Use component/tuner out to play out to HDTV from the computer so you can enjoy your HDV masterpieces... Dammit, wish I had money for such a venture!

I think it will be cool to see over the next few months all the sorts of paraphenelia this new HDV format is going to generate. Like Lorin Thwaits is on the right track with his cineframe 24 frameserver app... Until the masses go HDTV, I think the debates will rage on in terms of the most effective pipeline for preserving the HDV "quality" when downconverting - will it be better to go to say uncompressed quicktime's and then SD-DVD mpeg2? NTSC-DV avi's and then DVD mpeg2? Or too much generation loss from the "extra step?" Somehow edit the mpeg2 natively albeit laboriously and then just downconvert in one step to 720x480 mpeg 2 for DVD out?

I'm sure those Lumiere HD/Cineform dudes have some ideas on these points...

The type of camera control you're talking about will be possible through FireWire. We should be seeing FireWire remote camera controllers on the market pretty soon. I just hope that whoever introduces one will remember to put a FireWire pass-through jack on it.
