I don't know how much this will add...

I just got a Power Point presentation from our Sony rep on the Z1 and I thought I'd post it, since no one said I couldn't.

Pretty cool, thanks for the post!

1.) Looks as if the price is up by $1000. That's got to be an exchange rate deal - love the weak dollar.

2.) It says you can record 1080 60i and output 480 60p and 480 60i via firewire. Anybody know if this can be done on the fly into DV Rack at least for the purposes of field monitoring and capturing uncompressed audio?

3.) Anyone want to take a stab at 480p output for non-long GOP editing ease and SD delivery?

That seems like a pretty finalized PPT. In my opinion it pretty much clears up the debate:

No HDV at DVCAM speeds

No true 24p

I could be wrong, but I would imagine the price listed there would be MSRP, which we all know that (with rare exception) is the most useless number in the world...

$4900 is the initial street price. Probably $4700 by summer.

shot transition

Hey, about that shot transition-function that's mentioned in the powerpoint, does anyone know if the all the options of the Z1 are also available for the FX1? So it can change not only the zoom and focus but also the iris, gain, shutter etc. ?

Barry Green November 30th, 2004 11:20 PM

The FX1 can change shutter speed, iris, white balance, zoom, focus, and... something else, isn't there? Gain, I think?

Originally I thought the transition was a cheesy gimmick to overcome the lack of focus and zoom feedback for rack focusing. Now I think it's actually pretty cool and potentially quite powerful. Using shot transition can give you a faster zoom than any other power zoom option (about 1 second from full-wide to full-telephoto) at the push of a button. You can also ease into and ease out of the transitions, or blast into them at full speed.

The iris/shutter speed transition thing is kind of cool, you could design it to do a DOF shift in a scene while keeping the exposure consistent. The white balance shift is really cool, it lets you change the coloration in your scene smoothly, during the shot. Something that you'd have to do in post on any other camera.
