John Jay - what program did you use to do that in?

Whatever program converted it from 60i to 30p sure left in a lot of remnants of the interlacing.

The conversion was done on a PC running Canopus Procoder 2 with the following filters applied

1 adaptive deinterlace>discard non-dominant field

2 709 to 601 color correction

OK, I was curious because it looked WAY better than anything I've been able to produce using a DVfilm / Avid Xpress DV combo on my PC. Gosh, my stuff looks absolutely horrible compared to yours.

OK, you made me go back and look again. Now that I have scrutinized it, I don't see the artifacts I thought I saw earlier. In fact, it looks fine.

I wonder if it was just too late to be watching videos?

I looked up the output settings that were used and they are

720x480 NTSC 29.976
Non-interlaced 16x9
2 pass VBR Mastering Quality
min 4000 max 8000 avg 6900

Procoder correctly identifies the original HDV as PES stream top field first

took about 7min to render the 42 second sequence with all the filters and scaling included on P4 2.4gig

I'm just learning about editing and codecs. So my knowledge on the subject is growing, but I still need to learn WAY more about this stuff. What I did on my test (just to learn) was I used the DVfilm Maker demo and converted the .m2t file I had dl'ed from this site to 24p. I then imported it into Avid Xpress DV.

After I imported into Avid, it looked very good on the composer screen, but when I exported it, it looked horendous! I tried different codecs for both importing and exporting at different resolutions and came up with pretty much crap. I was able to get a decent .mov file after a few days of playing around, but it wasn't very big at all. Here's the clip actually if you want to see it.

When I saw yours, I was very impressed. I have on order, the Avid Xpress Pro version, which I then purchased the HD upgrade for $50 and I'll wait until mid 2005 to get my HDV editing capability, but I thought that I would be able to get something decent out of Avid Xpress DV and DV Film, but my results were very bad mostly.

You really sound like you know what you are doing. Any recommendations for a workflow with what I'm describing?

That footage looks good. The FX1 seems to have a distinct look to it, the mpeg compression gives still areas an almost static look while moving objects take a little hit and go rather blurry. It's interesting. If I was shooting with one I would tend to use static camera shots and let people and things move within the frame. Moving the camera makes the mpeg compression struggle a bit with everything changing at once.

It so high resolution its almost like you need not to pan inside frame. Just let the action occur within. Very nice and cinematic!

Avid Pro 5+ when the HDV update becomes available
