Does the FX-1 converts 720p tapes to DV?
 

Hello all, does anyone know if the FX-1 converts 720p tapes to DV on the fly to the Firewire port ? I have a ton of material that I shot on the HD-10 and would love to convert to DV to use with FCP...

I thought I heard that the HD10 cannot play back FX1 tapes (in HDV), but the FX1 can actually play back HD10 tapes (in HDV).

The FX-1 downconverts 1080i to DV on the fly via firewire, so one would have to assume.. good question. Hopefully someone can confirm this.

My understanding is that the FX1 cannot play back 720p through firewire at all (either as HDV or as downsampled DV) -- the only playback you get is through the analog component outputs. But hopefully someone with a 720p tape will confirm whether downsampled DV will play out the firewire port.

The FX1 will output HDV as HDV, or as DV, depending on a menu setting. I have seen it record DV and output DV, but I have myself recorded HDV and exported DV.

Page 91 of the manual specifies that the FX1 can play back a picture recorded in a 720/30p system of the HDV format but can not output it over the firewire jack, which is only for 1080i HDV and standard DV.

Steven, do you have any 720p footage (probably unlikely unless you also had an HD1 or HD10, I know...)

... the question was, when playing back 720, can it automatically downconvert to DV and play that out the firewire port? It can't play 720p over the firewire, but can it downconvert to DV? I think it probably can't, just trying to get Jason a definitive answer...

Sorry, I don't have a 720p tape, but it is unlikely that the FX1 can do more than play it out the composite ports, or the manual would explain how to set it up. The manual specifically explains how to set the downconvert from 1080i to DV.

Next time I have the FX1, I'll throw an HD10 HDV tape in and see what happens.
