Why did Sony release this camera in 1440X1080 when everything else is 1920X1080 ?

Barry Green February 9th, 2005 01:58 AM

Because nothing else is 1920x1080 (as per recording format, that is).

HDCAM records at 1440x1080. DVCPRO-HD records at 1280x1080 (for interlaced). It all gets up-rezzed to 1920x1080 on playback.

Only HDCAM-SR, the Viper/Venom combination, D5-HD and D6 Voodoo are 1920x1080 (that I know of).

You can use most of them as recording formats too, but you'll have to drag a deck with you. And with Viper/Venom you'll have to dump the Venom data on to a harddisk or a tape format.

Here's a nice comparison between HDCAM and D6 generational loss, just if your curious:

Because the pixel aspect ratio isn't SQUARE (1.0). It has the exact
same pixel aspect ratio as 16:9 DV, so it yields 1920 x 1080 if you
where to export this at 1.0 pixel aspect ratio. It's a way to reduce
the data rate a bit (as DV does as well for 16:9 widescreen!)

Just work with it, I doubt you would see the difference of 1440
and 1920 (at 1.0 pixel aspect) anyway. Be glad it is finally here <g>

>>It has the exact same pixel aspect ratio as 16:9 DV<<

No, it doesn't.
16x9 DV has a PA of 1.2.
1080i HDV has a PA of 1.33

Indeed, it isn't exactly the same. For some reason I had that
in my mind, it's pretty close (shouldn't it be 1.375, not 1.33?).

However, the idea behind it all is still the same...

Format/Motion

Now that I have made the purchase of a HVR-Z1 I need to update some other equipment, such as my playback source. Hence the original question. I have been looking at projectors and they are list as 1920X1080. Now I understand the image is resized to the playback unit. But another issue has been brought up. I need to build a preset in Apples Motion for HDV I have set the height at 1080i But I'm not sure if the width should be 1440 or 1920. Looking at other project presets they are the deliever size (DV 720X480) Also Motion has a preset pixel aspect for DVCPRO HD 1080i60 of 1:50 but based on Mr White's post, i'm not sure if I should use the custom setting and make it 1:33?
Thanks for the info

If you're working in square pixels (you should be) then Motion's settings should be 1920 x 1080.
Rich Harrington and Jeff Greenberg will be showing the proper workflow to HDV/HD and Motion at the Post Production Conference at NAB, if you'll be there.
