Hvr-z1 Tape Problems

I just recently bought a HVR-Z1. The dealer told me I could use the same panasonic pro tapes that I use for my DVX 100.
I just had a shoot with two cameras luckily.(Using my dvx-100 and the new Z1) The reason I say luckily is about 50% of my tape coverage I used in my Z1 was ruined. The frames were separated in every direction and looked like a a puzzle that needed to be put back together. I have since used sony tapes with no problems. I've heard different ones say to stay with the same brands as the camera. Has anyone else had problems with other brand tapes in the Z1.

Someting about putting BMW rims on a Mercedes Benz that just doesn't fit right with me. Although they will work......mmmmm, just can't do it.

I feel the same way about Panasonic minidv tapes in my Sony Cameras. *smile*

I've shot with several brands of tape, and during testing of the Z1, I shot two particular tapes over and over, doing probably 30 rewinds/refills over at least one of them. No dropouts.
What you're describing sounds like a magnetic issue or something interfering with the signal.
that said, you'll find not only more reliability, but much better error correction and therefore more accurate image with the DigitalMaster tapes. a coupla bux more, but well worth it, IMO

Hey Murry, it's the general rule that you shouldn't do a few things when it comes to tapes. You shouldn't mix tapes..always use the same brand and type. Also, in my opinion (and some others) if you use Sony...buy Sony tapes and the same with any others too. Another important thing - don't re-use tape because everytime you rewind or record again you're physically touching the camera heads and other mechanics. The camera gets overly used and the tapes get worn.

Tape is relatively cheap compared to your Z1U purchase. I'd buy a big stock in bulk - B&H does bulk sales on Sony tapes for sure.

If you're making money with your camera - I'd charge a little extra for tapes. It makes it worth while to buy in bulk!
