Confused on XLR Shotgun mic Assesories.

I have never bought a XLR mic and I cant seem to find any newbi help on it.

I have a Z1u and I am looking to buy this highly directional mic.

If I bouht that from B+H what else would I need to use it? windscreen? power? or could I use the camera power?(I rather use that) how about cables to connect to the XLR inputs?

Im sorta confused on that section. I dont want to buy the mic and find I can't even use it.

In addition to the ME67 capsule
you'll need the K6 module - $239
and a male-female XLR cable they list a basic one for $17.49
a windscreen is a plus if shooting outside, and a zepplin is nice if it's windy.

is there any other shotgun mics I can get for this camera only need power from the camera? (SO I dont have to buy the expensive power)

Kyle Fasanella June 19th, 2005 05:43 PM

im thinking of getting the highly recomended AT 897

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...=300615&is=REG

If I get this kit will I be able to use it without buying anything else? besides my Z1.

The AT897 is a nice mic, but I wouldn't call it highly directional, and its not intended to be.

Kyle Fasanella June 19th, 2005 08:03 PM

well does it need a battery. or is there a mic that is good and highly directional that needs no power for th Z1U?

Pete Bauer June 19th, 2005 08:16 PM

Kyle,

The AT897 can either use Phantom power or an AA battery. It comes with a basic foam windscreen. Audio Technica has a general information area with some great info:

http://www.audio-technica.com/cms/si...77e/index.html

It's a quick read and most worth the short time it'll take to read. Once you're through that, you can look at the specs for the 897 and other mics and understand how the mics differ from one another.

You'll probably want a couple of XLR cables of differing lengths for on-camera and off-camera use, a mount (often a basic Beyerdynamics mount is bundled with the mic by the retailer), maybe a "fishpole," and for outdoor work probably a "fuzzy" such as a Lightwave. The "fuzzies" ain't cheap.

Enjoy -- I've been very happy with mine!

I think the ME67 is the most directional mic you're going to find that doesn't require phantom power. You don't often need a long gun though.

I dont see anywhere to buy it where it says you DONT need phantom power.

Kyle,

I think the AT897 is an excellent mic for the money. Do a search on "AT897" and you will find many posts concerning this mic. Many prefer it over the very well known Sennheiser ME66.

But you should first clearly establish how you want to use the mic. Be aware that no shotgun mic is good for INTERIOR shots. For that the AT3031 would be much better. Almost all shotgun mics are designed for either outside use, or in large rooms where echos are not a problem.

For more insight on this, search/browse the Now Hear This forum.

All of the ME series mics accept either the K6p (phantom only) or K6 power module, which has an internal battery.

if I get the AT897 will I NOT need to get any other expensive powering assessory? If so I will get that.

If I do have to buy something else with the AT897 I will just get the me67 with power.

Marco Leavitt June 21st, 2005 06:33 AM

The AT897 has its own power supply, but you will still need an XLR adapter. These range from about $20 to $150 or so.

Sean M Lee June 21st, 2005 07:23 AM

why does he need an XLR adapter? He's using a Z1 not an FX1.

Marco Leavitt June 21st, 2005 07:40 AM

Sean,
Whoops. You're right. For some reason I thought he didn't have phantom power. That opens a whole new range of possibilities.
